A practical home adaptation inspired by Tuvalu’s pulaka-and-coconut tradition, using fully cooked taro with coconut cream.

Pulaka, a giant swamp taro, is an important traditional staple in Tuvalu and is commonly paired with coconut. Because true pulaka is difficult to source outside the Pacific, this recipe uses taro sold for cooking and clearly treats the result as a home adaptation.

-
Spoon the remaining coconut cream over the top and serve warm with fish.
Chef’s notes
This is an adaptation, not a claim that ordinary taro is the same crop as Tuvaluan pulaka. Use taro sold specifically for cooking and cook it fully before serving.

Where genuine pulaka is available through a trusted local food source, follow established Tuvaluan preparation guidance for that crop.
Storage
Refrigerate for up to 2 days and reheat thoroughly.
