EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE · MEASURING & PRECISION
Measuring Jug
A measuring jug provides graduated volume markings and a pouring spout for liquids and pourable ingredients.
What to Look For
- Clear metric graduations.
- A stable base.
- A clean pouring spout.
- Material rated for the temperatures and appliances in which it will be used.
- Enough headspace to prevent spills.
Correct Use
Place the jug on a level surface and read the liquid at eye level rather than holding the jug in the air. For precision baking, weighing many liquids in grams may be more repeatable than reading small volume graduations.
Common Mistakes
- Reading markings from above.
- Using a jug not rated for boiling liquids.
- Confusing millilitres with fluid ounces.
- Using a very large jug to measure a tiny volume precisely.
Chef’s Notes
Use volume when volume is practical; use a scale when repeatability matters more.
