Spice Grinder
An electric spice grinder rapidly reduces whole dry spices and seeds into powders or coarse blends, releasing aroma immediately before use.
Best Uses
Toasted cumin, coriander, peppercorns, dried chillies, cardamom seeds, spice blends, and small dry seasoning batches.
What to Look For
- A bowl shape that circulates small quantities effectively.
- Pulse control.
- Removable washable grinding cup where available.
- A lid that seals fine powder reasonably well.
Correct Use
Cool toasted spices before grinding, work in small batches, and pulse to the required fineness to limit unnecessary heat buildup.
Care & Maintenance
Clean thoroughly between strongly flavoured spices. Dedicated grinders can be useful where coffee, allergens, or highly aromatic seasonings must remain separate.
Common Mistakes
- Grinding hot spices directly from the pan.
- Overfilling so particles circulate poorly.
- Running continuously until heat damages aroma.
Chef’s Notes
Whole spices protect aroma better than pre-ground spices. Grinding close to use is one of the simplest ways to increase fragrance.
