Oven Thermometer
An oven thermometer independently measures oven-cavity temperature, helping identify differences between the control setting and the actual thermal environment.
Best Uses
Baking troubleshooting, roasting, checking older ovens, mapping hot zones, verifying preheat, and comparing rack positions.
What to Look For
- A clear high-temperature display.
- A stable hanging or standing design.
- A range appropriate to the oven.
- Reasonable response and accuracy for culinary use.
Correct Use
Place the thermometer near the area where food normally cooks and allow enough time for the oven and thermometer to stabilise. Move it between positions when mapping hot spots.
Common Mistakes
- Reading immediately after the preheat signal.
- Assuming one location represents the entire oven.
- Opening the door repeatedly while trying to measure stability.
Chef’s Notes
The oven dial is a command; the thermometer is evidence. When baking results are inconsistent, verify the environment before changing the recipe.
