Cake Turntable
A cake turntable rotates the cake while the decorator keeps tools in a relatively stable position, improving smooth icing, borders, combing, and detailed finishing.
What to Look For
- Smooth rotation without wobble.
- A broad stable base.
- A nonslip top or compatible cake-board system.
- Enough diameter for common cake sizes.
Correct Use
Centre the cake before finishing, rotate with the non-tool hand, and hold the scraper or offset spatula steadily while the turntable creates the movement.
Common Mistakes
- Decorating a cake that is not centred.
- Spinning too quickly for detailed piping.
- Using an unstable lightweight turntable for tall cakes.
Chef’s Notes
The turntable separates rotation from tool control. That is why it can produce smoother sides than moving the spatula continuously around a stationary cake.
